State-of-the-art Review of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a popular displacement measurement technique with instantaneous, full field and non-contact characteristics, which provides a powerful tool for measuring the deformation of soil and soil-structure systems in geotechnical engineering. Tracer particles, image capture system and image processing system are critical to a PIV system. Some practical applications and improvement methods of PIV technique in geotechnical engineering are expounded. In geotechnical tests, the PIV system can be improved by a series of methods, and the performance of image preprocessing is illustrated by two example applications.
